The young man in the picture is my grandson, Colby. I
decided to name this section of the website after him as he is at that inquisitive “Why”
age. If you are a parent or grandparent you know exactly what I am talking
about. Why? Just because.
I will try to
pass on thoughts and information whether it be tried and true facts or something
that is from left field that may or may not have any beneficial consequences at
all. I have found in my 32 years of selling irises that many good ideas and
problem solving solutions come from good old American ingenuity. An example
would be: My fellow workers and I were sitting around the break table when one
of them said, “you look like you are in some really deep thought process.” I
told them that I was trying to figure out a material that I could use to
permanently mark the numbers I use to keep track of my irises. I had tried the
zinc labels but the wire used to hold them in the ground rusted and broke after
a couple of years. Creosote stakes posed several problems, the creosote itself
and they were difficult to paint the numbers on. The next day one of the guys
said to me, “I know just what you need.” He suggested using PVC pipe, putting a
tee on the top and painting the number on the tee. I tried it and that has been
almost 20 years ago. I do from time to time have to repaint the number on the
tee

but what an
idea! It is probably not what you want sticking out of your flower garden but
for me it was the perfect solution. I use the ¾ inch pipe on two foot pieces of
pipe. You can use the half-inch and make shorter stakes without them being so
conspicuous in your flower beds.
Please email me
any questions, ideas, thoughts, or tips that you may have concerning flowers and
gardening in general. If something has been bugging you, for instance “bugs” let
us know. If I post a garden problem that someone needs help with and you know
something about the problem or if you have a solution, email it to me. If you
have a good garden story that you would like to pass on to others, email it to
me. Feel free to respond to anything you see on this site. The only rule is,
“keep it clean” leave the dirt in the garden.
Happy Gardening, Colby and Pap
